About the Campaign

The Diabetes and Flu/Pneumococcal Campaign is part of an ongoing public service campaign called Diabetes. One Disease. Many Risks. This Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campaign's purpose is to reduce other illnesses faced by people with diabetes. This year, CDC is focusing on the increased risk of death from influenza and pneumonia.

  • During flu epidemics, death rates among people with diabetes increase by 5% to 15%.
  • Although people with diabetes are more likely to die with the flu, research indicates that about 50% of them did not get a flu shot.

CDC uses a multidisciplinary approach to reach its audiences. One part of the two-pronged national campaign is technical assistance for CDC's 59 state and territorial diabetes prevention and control programs. CDC helps them effectively develop strategies and work with the media to increase awareness that people with diabetes need to get flu and pneumonia shots. CDC's National Immunization Program and National Center for Infectious Diseases became partners with CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion's Division of Diabetes Translation to strengthen and further disseminate the campaign. The health systems-based interventions promote health professional recommendation of flu and pneumonia shots, and vaccine availability.

Campaign elements include television, radio, and print public service announcements (PSAs), an educational consumer brochure, a poster, health care professional and consumer post cards, a sample press release, and media kits. Some PSAs were developed especially for Hispanic/Latino and African-American audiences.
