Cancer Statistics by Cancer Type
Every year, cancer claims the lives of more than half a million Americans. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease. One of every four deaths in the United States is due to cancer. According to United States Cancer Statistics: 2008 Incidence and Mortality Web-based Report, 565,460 people—about 1,550 people a day—died of cancer in the United States in 2008.
