Cancer Disparities Report Drives Program Planning
Colorado Central Cancer Registry
In 2008, the Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Control Program and the Colorado Central Cancer Registry jointly produced the report, Cancer and Poverty, Colorado 1995–2006. The report presented information about cancer disparities by several socioeconomic factors.
Grantees of the Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Pulmonary Disease (CCPD) Competitive Grants Program used this report to guide cancer program planning and implementation throughout Colorado. The CCPD program grants funds for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic pulmonary disease.
Cancer registry data can be analyzed and used in innovative ways beyond the traditional incidence and mortality tracking. By categorizing the data by socioeconomic status and pairing the data with Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, a clear picture of cancer disparities emerges which can drive targeted, cost-effective cancer program planning.
