OUT8108 - Best Practices for Field Days Assessment

Course CodeOUT8108
Course TitleBest Practices for Field Days Assessment
DescriptionGetting students outdoors is just the beginning. What does it take to ignite their interests and excitement about the natural world around them? We typically say, hands-on, interactive learning. But how do we make that happen? And what does success really look like? This 2-day interactive workshop goal is to build a strong foundation on the fundamental components of quality field day and/or field trip programs. Using Field Day examples, video and demonstrations, participants will explore the Best Practices for Environmental /Field Day programs (BPFD). In addition, participants will be trained in using a valid and reliable observation tool that measures how well field days and field trips operate. The first day will build an understanding of the best practices for field day success. The 2nd day will focus on how to measure the impact that your field day is having on your intended outcomes. Participants are asked to share their field day highlights and schedules. Participants will be certified to use the tool at their sites if they code at the appropriate level.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Describe six best practices for field days, and apply them in program design & delivery.
2. Explain pros and cons of different pedagogical teaching models.
3. Explain and demonstrate presentation skills to field day presenters.
4. Evaluate field days and field trips using a valid observation tool.
