Field workshop for new or experienced 4x4 drivers, designed to learn, refresh and practice driving skills for common backcountry 4x4 driving scenarios. Students will learn how 4-wheel drive systems work, how to assess terrain features, avoid obstacles, and safely negotiate challenging conditions while learning to avoid getting stuck or damaging the vehicle. Terrain features will include mud, steep slopes, water crossings, off-camber slopes, switchbacks, ”V”-crossings, deep ruts, debris crossing, dead-end backups, confined space maneuvering, and large rock obstacles. Basic vehicle recovery techniques will be introduced in a progression format, from simple to complex. This course is held rain or shine in a remote field location. Dress for the weather and be prepared to get muddy if you get stuck.
Objectives: Improving off road driving skills, learning how to avoid becoming stuck or damaging vehicles in the field.
