Wendy Williamson

Spotlight on Women's Health

Interview With a Woman With Bipolar Disorder

Just weeks before her final semester at Virginia Tech, Wendy Williamson was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a serious medical illness that causes shifts in a person's mood and energy. The person may feel very happy and "up," which is called mania, and then feel very depressed. During her 20s, Wendy ignored her illness and turned to alcohol and other destructive behaviors to try to feel better. But they didn't help. Rather, they led to more times of mania and of depression. Eventually, Wendy accepted her illness and got treatment. Learn how she takes care of herself today and her hope for the future.

Affordable Care Act Ensures Women Receive Preventive Services at No Additional Cost

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced new guidelines to ensure that women receive preventive health services at no additional cost. The guidelines require new health insurance plans to cover women's preventive services such as well-woman visits, screening for gestational diabetes, testing for human papillomavirus (HPV), HIV screening and counseling, breastfeeding support, domestic violence screening, and contraception without charging a co-payment, a co-insurance fee, or a deductible. New health plans will need to include these services without cost-sharing for insurance policies with plan years beginning on or after August 1, 2012.
