2012AA HCPCS Version of Current Dental Terminology Source Information

Authority
The HCPCS Version of Current Dental Terminology (HCDT) is produced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Current Dental Terminology (CDT) is produced and maintained American Dental Association (ADA). It has been adopted by the U.S Secretary of Health and Human Services as the standard for reporting dental services on normal transactions.

Purpose
HCDT codes are used for the billing of dental procedures to Medicare and other insurers.

Description
CDT is a dental procedures code set. It is included in Level II of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) as HCDT. For more information about HCPCS, see the HCPCS source synopsis.

Metathesaurus Scope
As of the 2009AA Release, CDT has been removed from the Metathesaurus. CDT continues to be included in this HCDT source.

Audience
HCDT may be used by dental professionals and dental insurers.

Metathesaurus Update Frequency
HCDT is updated annually in the Metathesaurus, in conjunction with HCPCS.
