Master

A computer-based version of a record that maintains the original record's essential features and information, one the organization intends to manage for the long-term, and one that is used for the production of a range of copies used for specific purposes (derivatives and duplicates). A master copy may replace the original as the record copy, if produced and managed in a manner that ensures authenticity and integrity of the record. Digitization Services Branch staff create standard master files for a variety of types of digitization projects, and may create one or more digital master files depending on the original records and the intended purpose for the digitization.
