Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (Parent K24) (Established Researchers)

This award provides protected time to mid-career clinical investigators who are typically at the Associate Professor level or the equivalent and who have their own independent peer-reviewed research support to provide mentoring to junior clinical investigators, particularly K23 grantees, in patient-oriented research and to stabilize the careers of these investigators so that they could continue to conduct patient-oriented research and be available as mentors in patient-oriented research.

It is expected that the K24 recipients will obtain new or additional independent peer-reviewed funding for patient-oriented research as a Program Director/Principal Investigator and establish and assume leadership roles in collaborative patient-oriented research programs. In addition, it is expected that there will be an increased effort and commitment to act as a mentor to beginning clinician investigators in patient-oriented research to enhance the research productivity of both the K24 investigator and increase the pool of well-trained clinical researchers of the future.

Candidates for this award must have a health-professional doctoral degree or its equivalent. Such degrees include but are not limited to the M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., O.D., D.C., Pharm.D., N.D. (Doctor of Naturopathy), as well as a doctoral degree in nursing. Candidates with Ph.D. degrees are eligible for this award if the degree is in a clinical field or they perform patient-oriented research (POR). This may include clinical psychologists, clinical geneticists, speech and language pathologists.

Candidates should typically be in the midcareer stage at the Associate Professor level or functioning at that rank in an academic setting or equivalent non-academic setting and must have an established record of independent, peer-reviewed patient-oriented research grant funding including at the time of application and record of publications. This award is intended for individuals who have a record of supervising and mentoring patient-oriented researchers. A K24 award recipient who is promoted to Full professor, during the course of the award, but continues to have an independent peer-reviewed patient-oriented research program and provides mentoring to new investigators, may continue to be supported through the K24 program. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, non citizen nationals, or legal permanent residents of the U.S.

Who is eligible? Patient-oriented investigators at U.S. institutions with independent research support.
The opportunities? Conduct patient-oriented research and act as research mentors.

Duration of support? 3 to 5 years. Beginning with New (Type 1) K24 applications submitted to NHLBI for the application date of February 12, 2011 and beyond, the total maximum length of K24 support will be 5 years. NHLBI will not accept Renewal (Type 2) applications for these K24s. NHLBI will accept Renewal (Type 2) applications for K24s that were awarded in FY 2010 (last day September 30, 2010) or earlier. NHLBI will only accept new K24 applications submitted to NHLBI February 12, 2011 and thereafter that request 3.0 calendar months' effort (25%). Applications requesting above 25% effort will not be reviewed.

Where? Domestic non-Federal organizations, public or private, such as medical, dental or nursing schools or other institutions of higher education.

Applications due? February 12, June 12, and October 12 - new applications;
March 12, July 12, and November 12 - renewal and resubmission applications.

Salary: The salary that may be requested and awarded is 25% of the recipient's institutional salary, exclusive of fringe benefits, up to the maximum allowable annual salary rate in effect at the time of award. NIH issues an annual notice of the maximum allowable salary rate in the NIH Guide.

Research Development Support: Up to $50,000 for research development support for Type 1 and 2 K24 applications only (noncompeting grants will not be included).
