NHLBI RESEARCH TRAINING IN PREVENTIVE CARDIOLOGY

Abstract

This multidisciplinary training program in Preventive Cardiology will provide pre- and postdoctoral fellows with knowledge and skills for investigative careers in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Trainees will identify a mentor with whom a career development plan will be designed to meet their individual needs. Resources of the Rochester Clinical and Translational Research Institute, funded by a CTSA Award from NIH, will be available. The training will include one year of didactic coursework on the theory and methods of preventive cardiology research, including vascular biology, epidemiology, biostatistics, health services and outcomes research, social and behavioral medicine, clinical trials, health informatics, and research ethics. Coursework can fulfill requirements for a Master in Public Health Degree (Clinical Investigation track). This didactic training will be supplemented by a series of skill-building workshops and research seminars, including instruction in the ethical and responsible conduct of research, recruitment and retention of research subjects, presentation and publication of scientific work, relationships with industry and technology transfer, research project management, and writing of competitive research proposals. Trainees will have the opportunity to select senior research mentors from five research clusters, including vascular biology (molecular biology, lipidology, hematology, experimental pathology); clinical trials/experimental therapeutics; health services and outcomes research; social and behavioral medicine (including risk factor modification and community intervention); and epidemiology (including nutrition). Three postdoctoral fellows will each receive at least two years of postdoctoral research training. Postdoctoral fellows to be recruited will be physicians, doctorally prepared nurses and professionals from other health-related disciplines. One predoctoral fellow each year will be supported for coursework and thesis preparation leading to a PhD degree in cardiovascular epidemiology or cardiovascular health services research. This Training Program will seek to alleviate a perceived shortage in investigators with "state-of-the-art" research skills applied to the prevention of our leading cause of death, cardiovascular disease.
