About NAGPRA DATABASES

National NAGPRA maintains several online databases designed to provide access to information on a variety of NAGPRA-related topics. All of the databases have search capabilities that allow the user to locate specific information. The databases are typically updated monthly. We understand that institutions and tribes may discover errors or matters that require updating, and we are pleased to work with them on an ongoing basis. Please contact the database administrator, on how to make corrections to the databases.

• Native American Consultation Database (NACD) is an easy way to identify a current official contact for Indian tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations. Names and addresses of tribal leaders are entered from the current Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Leaders Directory. Maps showing the location of Indian reservations, Indian land claims, and military bases are available to provide information that can be used during consultation. Use the state tables compiled from Indian Land Cessions 1784-1894 as additional consultation resources. Changes in contact information or corrections to the data should be sent to the database administrator. Updated Aug 2012

• Notices of Inventory Completion (NIC) Database is a searchable library of published Federal Register notices pertaining to Native American human remains and associated funerary objects. Updated Sep. 17, 2012
  

• Notices of Intent to Repatriate (NIR) Database is a searchable library of published Federal Register notices pertaining to Native American unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. Updated Aug 28, 2012

• Notices of Intended Disposition (NID) Database completes the disclosure and public access of the NAGPRA compliance documents for public use, with new discovery information. Updated Jul 2012
  

• Culturally Unidentifiable (CUI) Native American Inventories Database provides information about Native American human remains that have been determined to be culturally unidentifiable and has been compiled on behalf of the Review Committee pursuant to 43 CFR 10.10 (g). The database summarizes the inventory information submitted by museums and Federal agencies and is not meant to be an exact copy of their inventory data. Though an effort has been made to verify the accuracy of the data presented in this database, slight discrepancies between these and the actual museum and agency inventories may remain. Efforts to verify data are ongoing.
  The database now includes 17,920 records describing 127,617 Native American human remains and 941,190 associated funerary objects inventoried by 677 museums and Federal agencies. Among the human remains included here are 5,911 that have been culturally affiliated since they were first inventoried as culturally unidentifiable. New templates for notices pursuant to 43 CFR 10.11 are available for use in preparing draft Federal Register notices. View a listing of Notices of Inventory Completion using the new CUI rule. • Culturally Affiliated (CA) Native American Inventories Database. This database represents an extensive tool of reference for anyone wishing to have a snapshot on the current status of many of the Native American human remains that have been culturally affiliated as a result of consultation with tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations. All individuals on this database should be represented in a Notice of Inventory Completion.
  The database summarizes the inventory information submitted by museums and Federal agencies and is not meant to be an exact copy of their inventory data. Though an effort has been made to verify the accuracy of the data presented in this database, slight discrepancies between these and the actual museum and agency inventories may remain. The database includes 6,009 records and accounts for 56,792 Native American human remains and 1,241,168 associated funerary objects inventoried by 461 museums and Federal agencies. Corrections, updates, and additions to this database will be made as museums and agencies continue to verify the data that have been entered, or submit revised inventories. Updated Sep 2012

• Summaries Database. Each record contains the name of the tribe(s) receiving a copy of a summary from a museum or Federal agency.
