Socioenvironmental Maps—Poverty

Counties with the highest percentages were located primarily in the South Atlantic, Lower Mississippi River, Appalachian, and Southwestern Regions. The frequency distribution indicates that for the majority of counties, the percentage of the population living in poverty was between 5% and 25%.

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2004 Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates Program
Note: The number of people in poverty was estimated using direct and regression model estimates based on the Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey and administrative records and census data, including tax returns and food stamp records.
* Categories defined according to quintile cutpoints.
