COCA Conference Call - April 28th

Overview of Federal Public Health Emergency Law
The CDC Public Health Law Program will co-host the facilitated conference call “Federal Public Health Emergency Law – Implications for State and Local Preparedness and Response,” on April 28, 2009. Senior legal counsel to CDC, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency will present a comprehensive overview of the principal federal laws that frame responses to all-hazards public health emergencies. The conference call will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET; there is no charge for participation. For more information, including the call-in number and passcode, visit:

Comprehensive Preparedness Guide 101 - A Guide for All-Hazard Emergency Operations Planning - FEMA - April 14
The FEMA Comprehensive Preparedness Guide, CPG 101 provides general guidelines on developing Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs). It promotes a common understanding of the fundamentals of planning and decision making to help emergency planners examine a hazard and produce integrated, coordinated, and synchronized plans. This Guide helps emergency managers in State, Territorial, Local, and Tribal governments in their efforts to develop and maintain a viable all-hazard EOP.

Ready Classroom Teaches Emergency Preparedness Nationwide - FEMA - April 13
Ready Classroom will provide elementary and middle school teachers with resources to integrate natural disaster preparedness information into their curriculum. The program is an extension of Ready Kids, a nationwide effort designed to encourage children and families to take action and prepare for emergencies.

Preparing Makes Sense for Older Americans. Get Ready Now. - FEMA - April 13
Seniors are particularly vulnerable in disasters because of physical, psychosocial and cultural characteristics, research has found.  FEMA for Seniors provides information on FEMA programs and flood insurance and includes presentations by the American Red Cross and Small Business Administration on disaster assistance.

The Three Step Process to Disaster Assistance - FEMA - April 13
Disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, essential home repairs or other serious disaster-related expenses, such as medical, dental, funeral or burial expenses, not covered by insurance or other sources.  The three basic steps to getting disaster assistance from FEMA can be found at the following link.

Medical Product Safety Alert

Arrow International Announces Worldwide Voluntary Recall of Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IAB) Catheters - FDA - April 14
Teleflex Medical announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the voluntary medical device recall initiated on February 2, 2009 by Arrow International’s Cardiac Care Division involving volume connectors for its 30cc, 40cc and 50cc Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IAB) Catheters as a Class 1 recall. FDA defines Class I recalls as, “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The Pistachio Product Recall Widget allows you and your visitors to search for pistachio product recalls. A widget is an application that displays the featured content directly on your web page. You can embed content in personalized home pages, blogs, and other sites. Once you’ve added the widget, there’s no technical maintenance. FDA.gov will update the content automatically.  Place this Pistachio Product Recall Widget on your Web site, portal home page, or in your blog to allow you and your visitors to search for pistachio product recalls.

Travelers' Health

Pertussis in Australia - CDC - April 17
Since early 2009, several areas in Australia have reported an increase in cases of pertussis. As of April 13, 2009, more than 7,000 cases have been reported across the country.

Yellow Fever in Brazil - CDC - April 17
Since the beginning of 2009, there has been an expansion in areas of yellow fever virus transmission in Brazil. Two states, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paolo, have recently designated expanded areas of risk following confirmation of new human cases of yellow fever within their boundaries. This demonstrates the particular intensity of yellow fever virus activity in the southern part of the country.
