NHLBI Educational Materials Catalog: Working Meeting on Blood Pressure Measurement Summary Report
Working Meeting on Blood Pressure Measurement Summary Report
This report summarizes a meeting convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and American Heart Association to provide recommendations for blood pressure measurement in the United States. A central issue is the dependence on the mercury manometer as the "gold standard" for BP measurement. This instrument is no longer available in some health care settings. The goals of the meeting are to examine the science that supports current blood pressure measurement policies and to identify additional research needed to strengthen policies. This may lead to changes in standards by which blood pressure is measured and how instruments are regulated, thereby leading to changes in policies to improve measurement.
