What is GOSDOS?

Government Open Social Data on Socrata (GOSDOS) is a user group for people with the common interest in making government public data more accessible, interactive, engaging and use the Socrata platform to enable the sharing and socializing of public data.  http://socratausergroup.wordpress.com/

The group began after an Information Processing Managers Association (IPMA) professional development event held in Olympia, WA on January 26, 2011. At this meeting, presenters from Socrata, the state of Oregon, the city of Seattle and King County discussed implementation of open data sites on the Socrata platform. Meeting attendees expressed a desire for a user group that would meet virtually and continue the discussion.

We come together to exchange ideas, discuss best practices and share lessons learned about making public data accessible and transparent to all.  Most of the time, this happens through virtual meetings, though we have had one physical meetup.

Meeting agendas are built organically by the group organizers (listed below) and reflect new uses of the tool by our various jurisdictions, new features (thanks to Socrata participation), and problems/solutions/best practices that we share.

Please be cognizant that the 3/8 meeting will be a discussion about group infrastructure/organization and not the actual usergroup meeting; participants in the 3/8 meeting should be interested in being on the usergroup steering committee.

GOSDOS Organizers

  • Wally Rogers, E-Government Manager, State of OR Dept of Administrative Services (DAS)
  • Gene Newton, Data.Oregon.Gov Pilot Project Manager, State of OR Dept of Administrative Services (DAS)
  • Mary Groebner, IT Portfolio & Project Manager, State of WA Dept of Enterprise Services (DES)
  • Karen Barrett, Sr. Policy & Planning Consultant, State of WA Office of Financial Management (OFM)
  • Sabra Schneider, Director of Electronic Communications, City of Seattle Dept of Information Technology (DoIT)
  • Bruce Blood, Citywide Web Mgr & Mgr of the Citywide Web Team, City of Seattle Dept of Information Technology (DoIT)
  • Neil Berry, GIS Web Developer, City of Seattle Dept of Information Technology (DoIT)

Re-ignition Meeting

Please contact Mary Groebner to be added to kickoff meeting for the steering committee on March 8th, 2012.

We're very pleased to announce the latest release of Socrata mapping functionality.  WIth this release, you'll see dramatically improved performance on maps with many coordinates and an improved user experience.  Released the second week in January.  Details below... happy mapping!

Features:

•All maps can now use value-based point color and size variation
•Features are uniformly supported across maps; Bing maps are no longer less powerful than Esri maps
•Outlined cluster areas on mouseover
•Overall smarter heuristics about clustering

Benefits:

•Consistent clusters (Zooming or panning will not change the structure of the clusters)
•Faster clustering upon zoom or pan
•Paves the road for further improvements to maps in the future
