Minority Diversity Programs in the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine
|
Program Description
The Minority Diversity Programs in the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) aim to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the genomic sciences. The HGSC established three programs: HGSC-Genetics/Genomics Research Education And Training (GGREAT) program, HGSC-Pre-Graduate Education Training (PGET) program and the HGSC-Engineering Scholarship program. The HGSC-GGREAT program selects ten undergraduate students from local universities to participate in our nine-week summer biomedical research program. The HGSC-PGET program selects HGSC employees with bachelor degrees and recent college graduates to participate in our post-baccalaureate enrichment program. The HGSC-Engineering Scholarship program selects an HGSC employee to receive support to obtain a Mechanical Engineering degree.
Research Opportunities
All HGSC-GGREAT participants have the opportunity to participate in cutting edge research projects while here at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Students are placed according to their disciplines, which could be any of the following: math, computer science, biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics and mechanical engineering. Our Robotics Laboratory, Bioinformatics Department, New Technologies Laboratory, cDNA Technology Laboratory, and HAPMAP Laboratory provide summer research opportunities for the HGSC-SRP students. We also place students in laboratories in the BCM Molecular and Human Genetics department. Once the students are accepted into the HGSC-GGREAT, they are matched with a research mentor according to their experience and interest. The program provides a stipend and housing expenses.
