From the 1940s through the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the United States developed, tested and assembled nuclear weapons at sites throughout the country. Over the past 20 years, states have worked with the Department Of Energy (DOE) on the cleanup of nuclear weapons production sites.
