In less than a week since Popular Choice voting began in our Apps for the Environment challenge, you already placed more than 1200 votes in support of your favorite green apps. We’re excited by the response from the community, but not surprised after people from around the country already submitted almost 100 ideas for apps and created 38 final products that both use EPA data and promote public health. By listening to and working with the community from the beginning, together we’ve gained the momentum in helping developers and entrepreneurs use our environmental data to create innovative services that can make an impact.

Data, Apps, and Maps: Working Toward a GreenGov
Today the Obama Administration announced new features to Energy.Data.gov, the open government platform for citizens and software developers to engage with energy- and environment-related data, apps, maps, and challenges. The new features were announced at a Council on Environmental Quality three-day conference called GreenGov, which is focused on, you guessed it, making the Federal Government more energy efficient.
Historical Federal Government Energy Use Data Available
The Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) is pleased to release historical energy use and cost data for the Federal Government for the fiscal years 1975 through 2007. Data for later years will be released in the near future, but for now, are considered preliminary as the method for collecting the data changed last year to accommodate the 2008 baseline of the Federal greenhouse gas goals under Executive Order 13514.
