Sustainable Manufacturing
ORNL's Sustainable Manufacturing research, development and deployment (RD&D) efforts are part of the Laboratory's Office of Energy Materials. Sustainable manufacturing draws on the lab's world-class leadership in materials science RD&D to develop and implement the materials, processing, devices, and implementation strategies needed to increase industrial energy efficiency. The program partners with industry to translate the discoveries of science into real world energy solutions.
Programs
RD&D efforts in Sustainable Manufacturing are directed and funded primarily by three primary sponsors and by several Work for Others (WFO) efforts funded directly by industry.
The ORNL Industrial Technologies Program under the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy partners with U.S. industry to develop and implement real world energy solutions. ORNL is a global leader in materials science and technology, reactions and separations, controls and sensors, combined heat and power, and best practices for industrial energy efficiency. ITP is actively engaged with industry to reduce industrial energy use and improve industrial competitiveness. The program office is currently involved in collaborative efforts with industrial partners in advanced materials, separations technologies, nanomanufacturing, alternative fuels and feedstocks, and industrial energy assessments.
The ORNL Fossil Energy Program is supported by the DOE Office of Fossil Energy the DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory, the DOE Fossil Energy Clean Coal Technology Program, the DOE National Petroleum Technology Office, and the DOE Fossil Energy Office of Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The ORNL Fossil Energy Program shares with DOE Oak Ridge Operations technical management responsibility for activities on the DOE Fossil Energy Advanced Research Materials Program. The Advanced Research Materials Program includes research at other DOE and government laboratories, at universities, and at industrial organizations.
Sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the DARPA Programs Office at ORNL works closely with the Office of Energy Materials to leverage ORNL core research capabilities and staff to effectively deliver on DARPA's mission to transform basic science into military capability.
