National Enteric Laboratory Diagnostics and Outbreak Team (NELDOT)

The National Enteric Laboratory Diagnostics and Outbreak Team (NELDOT) mission is to decrease the burden of foodborne illness by detecting outbreaks more rapidly, identifying infrequently detected etiologies, and by characterizing both new and existing bacterial enteric pathogens in domestic and international outbreak settings. Our approach utilizes traditional isolation and identification culture techniques, molecular detection methods, enterotoxin testing, and immunologic methods to identify foodborne etiologies. We partner with PulseNet USA, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), and the National Enteric Reference Laboratories, all located within EDLB. We also collaborate with CDC Epidemiologic Branches, FDA, and USDA as well as other state and local public health laboratories.
