VFC Video Study Guide: Compliance Visits

Honing Your Skills

This study guide is to be used in conjunction with viewing the video VFC Compliance Visits: Honing Your Skills. The study guide can be used to facilitate discussion during group trainings or used for individual trainings. The video and study guide are divided into different sections. After viewing each section of the video, pause the video and review the following questions.

Before Viewing the Video

  • How do you currently prepare for a VFC Compliance Site Visit?
  • Do your current preparation activities help you feel more prepared for the compliance site visit?
  • If you answered "no" to the above question, what areas need more preparation?

After Viewing the Video Section "Before the Visit"

  • What will you do differently in your preparation for a VFC Compliance Site after viewing the "Honing your Skills" video?

After Viewing the Video Section "During the Visit"

  • What ideas did the video give you on how to use or improve your observation and listening skills during a VFC Compliance Site Visit?
  • The video showed "good" Audrey removing the beverages from the storage unit and suggesting that she would help Mary arrange her vaccines so the inventory was organized and stored appropriately.  What other high-priority questions in Section I of CDC’s VFC Site Visit Questionnaire could a VFC reviewer correct during a VFC compliance site visit?
  • When Audrey and Mary quarantine the vaccines in the door while determining if the vaccines have been exposed to out of range temperatures, why did they not seal the bags shut?
  • Why is it important to check the entire VFC inventory instead of only spot checking one or two trays or vaccine types?
  • How can you incorporate the educational components that "good" Audrey demonstrated in the video into your VFC compliance site visits?

Exercise: Using the CDC Vaccine Price List, calculate the total cost of a VFC inventory that contains one box of each the VFC-covered vaccines using the CDC vaccine cost. Repeat the exercise calculating the cost using the private-sector vaccine cost. Display the cost for each inventory (public and private) and the total combined cost in a picture of a storage unit (preferably use a graphic of a unit that is acceptable to the VFC program). Participants can be split into groups to share the work. The goal of this activity is to promote discussion and understanding of the cost of VFC vaccines.
