National Suicide Statistics at a Glance

These web pages provide an overview of suicide trends and patterns in the United States (US). The pages present suicide data at the national level to users.  National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) Mortality data are used to provide information on leading causes of death and suicide rates by county, age, sex and race/ethnicity. The pages also display case-fatality rates for self-harm injuries by utilizing the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System All Injury Program (NEISS-AIP) data in conjunction with NVSS mortality data. Finally, data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) provide information on suicides by associated circumstances for the 16 participating states and Youth Risk Behavior Survey System (YRBSS) data are used to illustrate prevalence of suicide thoughts, plans, and attempts among high school students in the U.S.

These data can be used by public health officials, researchers, practitioners and the public to better understand the burden of suicide, population subgroups at risk, and the need for effective prevention efforts.
