A MINUTE OF HEALTH WITH CDC
Autism Awareness
Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders — United States, 2006
Recorded: December 15, 2009, posted January 7, 2010

This program is presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC — safer, healthier people.

Autism is a developmental disorder which adversely impacts the lives of the people who have it and their families. A recent CDC study covering areas in 11 states indicated that nearly one percent of children had some form of autism. Children with autism are likely to have decreased development of social and communication skills, as well as unusual play and other behavioral issues. Autism can be diagnosed as early as two years of age. Parents who are concerned about their child’s development should talk to their healthcare provider. Early diagnosis can help improve a child’s chance to reach his or her full potential.
