General Suggestions for Searching

The Google search engine on the Department of Justice ADA Home Page looks for text (a word, number or words) that appears in one or more documents on the Department's website. The four search links at the top of this page search for ADA information in specific areas of the Department's extensive website. These links are provided to focus the search to ADA information and make it easier to get to what you want. If a broader search is desired use this link to look for information on the entire Department of Justice website, including ADA information.

For more information about using the Google Search appliance on the Department of Justice website please review Google Search User Help.

After a search is complete and the results are provided as a list of documents, any one can be viewed. After a document is selected, it will appear in a new window and it should open at the beginning of the document and not at the location where the searched word or phrase appears. To find the location of the word or phrase in the document, use the "FIND" or "FIND IN PAGE" command from the web browser. This command is usually found under "Edit" at the top of the browser's window. Once "FIND" or "FIND IN PAGE" is opened, enter the word or phrase that is being searched and choose "FIND" or "FIND NEXT."

Example
To search for ADA settlement agreements from a particular state.

1. Choose whether to search the ADA website or the FOIA website. The ADA website contains only featured settlement agreements while the FOIA website has nearly all the ADA settlement agreements. Because the FOIA website has the most settlement agreements, you might start there. Choose "Search Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) ADA Information" and a new window should appear.

2. Enter the name of the state in the window labeled "Search for:"

3. Select "Search..." to start the search.

4. When a new window opens with a list of possible documents, select one and the document should open in a new window. (note: some items may be settlements, some may be an index and others be other types of ADA information)

5. To find all the places where the state is listed, go to "EDIT" at the top of the browser window. Click the mouse while the cursor has selected "EDIT" , hold down the button and move the cursor to select "FIND." When the "FIND" window opens, type in the name of the state and select return or enter.

6. Use "FIND AGAIN" as needed to locate all the places where the name of the state appears in the document.

If the search does not find the material you are looking for, you should use another search link. For example "Search the ADA Website." And, if the search was to include press releases the "Search the Department of Justice Press Releases" should be used.
