The average annual expenses are as follows: Under age 18: metro, $616; near-metro, $647; near-rural, $569; rural, $706; Age 18-44: metro, $1,194; near-metro, $1,349; near-rural, $1,266; rural, $869; Age 45-64: metro, $2,161; near-metro, $2,352; near-rural, $2,180; rural, $2,237.
