Be the Generation to Help End the AIDS Epidemic

Welcome to the Be The Generation Web Site

Be The Generation was created by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to maintain and establish relationships with communities most impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in order to promote awareness, understanding, dialogue, and support for biomedical prevention research, including HIV vaccines, microbicides, and pre-exposure prophylaxis. The initiative is supported by the Division of AIDS (DAIDS), part of NIAID at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Please note that this is a temporary Web page. Due to technical difficulties, the regular Be The Generation Web site is currently disabled. We are working to correct this and will relaunch the Web site as soon as possible. Please check back soon.

Why We Need More Biomedical HIV Prevention Research

There is currently no cure for AIDS. Finding safe and effective methods to prevent the spread of HIV is our best hope for stopping the AIDS epidemic. With more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide, and more than 20 million lives lost, the need for biomedical prevention research remains urgent. We cannot stop the AIDS epidemic with care and treatment alone. Prevention is essential. Be The Generation arose from the urgent need for an effective, preventive HIV vaccine, and has recently expanded to include all biomedical prevention strategies. We partner with community leaders, local and national organizations, health professionals, and educators to reach communities most affected by HIV with the goal of increasing awareness of and knowledge about HIV prevention research. The future success of HIV prevention research studies depends on the understanding, trust, support, and participation of all communities. We can all be the generation to end the AIDS epidemic.

Be The Generation is on YouTube - Watch Community Testimonials

Part of our effort to strengthen community relationships includes talking to members of the community about their experiences with biomedical HIV prevention research and their personal efforts to end AIDS. Recently, Be The Generation sat down with some people to discuss microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis, vaccines, prevention as treatment, and other topics. All of these videos are on our YouTube channel.
