Classifications and Crosswalks

The Employment Projections (EP) program publishes the classification systems used to produce the 2010-20 employment projections. In addition, EP publishes selected crosswalks between EP employment projections and data from other sources.

Classification systems

Output and employment (195 commodity and industry sectors, and 104 summary sectors). [XLS]

This classification system is used for projections of:

  • Commodity and industry output
  • Industry employment

The system uses definitions found in the 2007 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

More information about the North American Industry Classification System is available from the Bureau of Census at: www.census.gov/eos/www/naics/.

NOTE: industries in this system are limited to sectors for which EP projects output. EP publishes industry employment for additional sectors in the National Employment Matrix (see below).

Industry employment directory [XLS]

To develop the National Employment Matrix industry structure, BLS staff combines the structures used to report estimates from the Current Employment Statistics (CES), the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES), and Current Populations Survey (CPS) programs. Data from OES, CES, and CPS used to construct the matrix are coded to the 2007 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which replaced the 2002 NAICS.(1)

Occupational employment directory [XLS]

The occupational structure of the Matrix is based on the structure used by the OES program which includes over 800 detailed occupations. The May 2010 OES estimates mark the first set of estimates based, in part, on data collected on the 2010 Standard Occupational Classification system. Almost all the occupations in this release are 2010 occupations; however, some are not. In these cases an estimate for a temporary occupation was created from data reported for one or more occupations in the 2000 SOC combined with data reported for one or more 2010 SOC occupations.

More information about the Standard Occupational Classification system is available at: www.bls.gov/soc/

More information about how the OES program classifies occupations is available at : www.bls.gov/oes/oes_ques.htm#Ques25
