Pelosi Statement on Passing of Russell Train

September 19, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passing of Russell Train, the first-ever Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the former EPA Administrator, and the former Chairman of the World Wildlife Fund:

“With Russell Train’s passing, America has lost a pioneer in environmental protection, a trailblazer in environmental activism, a dedicated public servant, and a leader committed to protecting wildlife and preserving our natural resources.

“Russell Train’s life and legacy are a reminder of an era when securing a cleaner, greener environment was not a matter for partisan political debate, but an urgent, bipartisan, national priority.  His work addressed pollution’s impact on the health of our children, the growth of our economy, and the alleviation of poverty.  His fingerprints can be found on nearly every landmark law designed to confront, and solve, our environmental challenges.

“Today, Americans breathe cleaner air, drink cleaner water, and live with fewer harmful chemicals thanks to the efforts and dedication of Russell Train.  We only hope it is a comfort to his family, friends, and all who knew him that so many mourn their loss at this sad time.”
