Description

NCANDS is a federally-sponsored national data collection effort for the purpose of tracking the volume and nature of child maltreatment reported each year within the U.S.

Supplier(s)

  • Administration for Children and Families (ACF)

Periodicity

Annual

Selected Content

Number of children and families receiving preventive services; reports and investigations of child abuse and neglect; child victims of maltreatment; fatalities; size of the state's child protective services workforce.

Methodology

NCANDS case-level data are collected from states through the Child File data submission. State that submit a Child File also submit an Agency File, which collects state-level data for areas not covered in the Child file (e.g., preventive services and screened-out referrals). Child File data are aggregated to the state level by key variables and then combined with data from the Agency File to create the Combined Aggregate File, which is available for analysis.
