Museums and Libraries Engaging America's Youth
IMLS's Youth Initiative is grounded in our mission to create and sustain a Nation of Learners. We know that IMLS spends millions of dollars every year to support youth development programs in communities across the nation. This initiative shines a spotlight on the role libraries and museums play in bringing about positive change in the lives of young people. These new tools will help libraries and museums do it better. This report shares the results of a year-long study of the impact of IMLS grants (1998-2003) though programs that served youth aged 9-19. Nearly 400 museum and library programs were surveyed about their goals, strategies, content, audience, and structure, as well as about their impact, effectiveness, and outcomes.
