Urban area-sorted files are available as fixed format text files and Excel files. Each urban area-sorted list file is sorted by urban area census code (UACE) and contains records for either: 1) all urban areas (ua_list_all.txt/xls), 2) urbanized areas (ua_list_ua.txt/xls), or 3) urban clusters (ua_list_uc.txt/xls). Each file includes urban areas in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas.

The text files are fixed format and designed for internet viewing. Five blanks are included after each field in the fixed format file. Start and end positions are included in the layout below for the fixed format text files. Area measurements are presented in both square meters and square miles. Area measurements in square miles are rounded to two decimal places. Population density values are in persons per square mile of land area, rounded to one decimal place.

Urban area state-sorted files are available as fixed format text files and Excel files. Each urban area state-sorted list file is sorted first by state and then by urban area census code (UACE) and contains records for either: 1) all urban areas (ua_st_list_all.txt/xls), 2) urbanized areas (ua_st_list_ua.txt/xls), or 3) urban clusters (ua_st_list_uc.txt/xls). Each file includes urban areas in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas (where applicable).

The text files are fixed format and designed for internet viewing. Five blanks are included after each field in the fixed format file. Start and end positions are included in the layout below for the fixed format text files.

Both file formats include the state name followed by a blank line. The next line includes the column names. The data for each state is followed by three blank lines.

Area measurements are presented in both square meters and square miles. Area measurements in square miles are rounded to two decimal places. Population density values are in persons per square mile of land area, rounded to one decimal place.

This file contains urban and rural population, population density, and land area by state. Urban area numbers are presented for all urban areas, urbanized areas, and urban clusters.

Area measurements are in square meters. Population density vales are in persons per square mile of land area, rounded to one decimal place. All percentage values are rounded to two decimal places.

2000 to 2010 Population and Area Change by 2010 Urbanized Area

This file contains total and percent change in population and land area for the 2010 Urbanized Areas from 2000 to 2010.

Total land area measurements are in square miles. Percent change in land area calculations are based on total land area of urban area in square meters. All total land area and percentage values are rounded to two decimal places.

Notes on urbanized area change: Area and population change can be the result of one or a combination of 1) internal growth, 2) new growth, and/or 3) the merger of adjacent urban territory formerly associated with an urban cluster.
