The U.S. Department of Education announced today that 17 Native Hawaiian Education (NHE) Program grants totaling $11 million will be awarded to support innovative projects that enhance the educational services provided to Native Hawaiians and to supplement and expand programs and authorities in the area of education.

"This program helps the Hawaii Department of Education create and support educational projects that promote and preserve the heritage and culture of native Hawaiians," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "The grants will be used to provide supplemental services that address the educational needs of native Hawaiian children and adults."

Types of projects supported by this program include early education and care programs; family-based education centers; beginning reading and literacy programs; activities to address the needs of gifted and talented native Hawaiian students; special education programs; professional development for educators; and activities to enable native Hawaiian students to enter and complete postsecondary education.

The NHE program is a discretionary grant program funded under Title VII, Part B of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.
