To interpret the DNA sequences of the human genome, NHGRI and others invested in comparative genomics research, using evolution to help identify the functional portions of the genome. This photographic collection represents many, but not all, of the organisms sequenced for comparative purposes. Animals are unharmed in sequencing studies, as only a small sample of blood is required for the analysis.
