    The residents of Edinet and its surrounding villages are a bit safer today, thanks to the recent U.S.-funded renovation of the regional fire station. The Edinet Regional Fire and Rescue Station was refurbished with a $430,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense's European Command.

    Warm Shoes for Every Child

    Ambassador William H. Moser, right, and Dearing Garner helped distribute winter shoes Dec. 12 to children in the auxiliary boarding school # 5 in Chisinau. The donation is part of a $200,000-plus project by the American charity Children's Emergency Relief International (CERI), of which Garner is executive director. CERI will donate about 7,300 pairs of shoes to children throughout the country.

    Twenty years ago, on Oct. 24, 1992, President George H.W. Bush signed the FREEDOM Support Act to assist countries of the former Soviet Union. Since then, Moldova has received $550 million from the United States to assist with building democracy and a free market system.
