Electronic Data Products

General Information about Electronic Data Products

The USPTO makes patent and trademark public data available in bulk form, which can be used to load into  databases or other analytical tools for research and analysis.  Bulk data is generally provided in the form of ZIP files containing TIFF or PDF images, structured ASCII files or concatenated XML documents.

For additional information on data products, see

To look up an individual patent or trademark, you can get that information without using bulk data.  USPTO searchable data is viewable through various search interfaces on the USPTO Web site, as well as through some free and commercial Web sites. To search the patent databases, see Patent Full-Text.  For pending and registered trademarks, see Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS).  Additional search options are available from the USPTO Home page.

USPTO Data Products Available Directly from USPTO

All trademark bulk data products and many patent bulk data products are available online from the USPTO at no charge. Due to their size and complexity, some patent data products are available from the USPTO only on a fee basis. Data products obtained directly from the USPTO are available on the publication date. For further details, see the links under "Downloads" in the navigation box.

USPTO Data Products Available through Google

In June 2010, the USPTO entered into a no-cost, two-year agreement with Google to make patent and trademark public bulk data more readily available to the public free of charge.  For more information, see Press Release 10-22.

Google provides free online access to many data products that are otherwise available from USPTO only on a fee basis or only on physical media.  This bulk data can be accessed at http://www.google.com/googlebooks/uspto.html.

Google has also developed a special data product consisting of Public PAIR (Patent Application Information Retrieval) data, which is not currently available from the USPTO in bulk form. To facilitate distribution and benefit the entire community of data users, USPTO authorizes Google to "mine" the data from its Web site during hours of low usage.  This arrangement serves as a bridge until such time that the USPTO is able to directly offer this data in bulk format. Public PAIR bulk data can be accessed at http://www.google.com/googlebooks/uspto-patents-pair.html.
