The Bureau of Reclamation joined the Kittitas Conservation Trust and several other partners for a special event celebrating a partnership that resulted in the removal of the Bruton Diversion Dam and the successful restoration of fish passage in Taneum Creek located about 12 miles north of Ellensburg, Wash. The project reconnected migrating Coho salmon and steelhead to their historic habitat. Reclamation played a central role in the effort by securing water rights from the Kittitas Reclamation District and constructing a piping system that will provide irrigators with a reliable water source without diverting water from Taneum Creek. The Bureau of Reclamation conducted the Taneum Creek Study involving the Bruton-Kittitas Reclamation District (KRD) Water Exchange as part of the Yakima River Basin Water Enhancement Project (YRBWEP). This report describes the objectives of the Bruton-KRD Exchange as providing Bruton Ditch water users with KRD water in exchange for not diverting their Taneum Creek irrigation water thereby increasing flows in Taneum Creek and facilitating the removal of Bruton Dam which will allow fish passage farther up Taneum Creek. |
