Description

This isn’t your typical Twitter webinar! We’re ditching the slides and directly interacting with you via Twitter, just like “real life,” to answer all your Twitter questions. If you like serving customers, networking, seizing opportunities, and expanding your influence, this session is for you. If you think Twitter is for finding out what @AneeshChopra ate for breakfast, this session is really for you—but prepare to have your mind changed.

Hear from @USGS, @OnSafety, and @airandspace, and the real people behind the tweets, who will share their secrets for engaging a unique audience. Find out why they are tweeting, what they are tweeting, and how they keep people engaged.

This class covers:

  • SMS = 140 characters
  • Writing style for Tweets
  • @ mentions and d (direct messages)
  • #Hashtags
  • Short URLs
  • Lists

And for fun:

  • Bad habits to avoid
  • Media management dashboards
  • Re-purposing content

About the Presenters

Justin Herman works at Phase One Consulting Group as a Federal advisor on strategic engagement, open government, and collaborative technologies. With 8 years experience in digital communications, he helps clients with the complete lifecycle of social media programming—from drafting policy and navigating legal considerations to implementing strategies that turn online discussion into measurable action. Prior to his role at Phase One Consulting Group, Justin started his career as an active-duty Air Force Public Affairs officer, where his first electronic publication earned the Thomas Jefferson Award for Best in the Department of Defense. He continued as a Congressional aide and later served as a health information technology advocate. He firmly believes today’s social media should be mobile, and tomorrow’s social media will focus less on destination access and more on integration with websites and services users already visit.

Victoria Portway is Chair, Web & New Media, at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. She directs the National Air and Space Museum's web-based outreach, social media, mobile, and other new media initiatives. In this role she is responsible for the Museum’s web & new media strategy, policies and procedures, creative direction, and day-to-day operations.

Her division also develops technology-based educational experiences for exhibitions on the Museum floor. They work closely with content professionals across the Museum to design engaging visitor experiences and strategically utilize web and new media technologies to meet their mission and the needs of visitors, whether they are online, onsite, or on the go. Vicki works closely with colleagues from around the Smithsonian, as well as professionals outside the Institution, to encourage collaboration, innovation, establish best practices, and advocate for web and new media outreach as an integral part of the Institution’s educational mission. Her Twitter handle is @sluggernova.

Stacey Palosky is the social media specialist and web content lead at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) (@OnSafety). Before joining CPSC, Stacey was a web editor and blogger at washingtonpost.com, where she managed many areas of the website in her decade at post.com. Her Twitter handle is @stacpal.

Scott Horvath works at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as the Web and Social Media Chief within the Office of Communications and Publishing. He's responsible for bureau-wide coordination and policy requirements, guidelines, and strategic direction for social media use at the USGS. Prior to his role as Web and Social Media Chief, Scott was a full-time web developer for over 14 years and worked in both Government and private sector organizations. He's currently tasked with leading an extensive effort to revamp the gamut of public and internal web presences at the USGS to improve overall customer service, usability, and discovery of critical science information.
