Patent Grant Data Products

A patent grant is an intellectual property right granted by the U.S. Government to an inventor "to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention throughout the United States or importing the invention into the United States" for a limited time in exchange for public disclosure of the invention when the patent is granted.

A patent grant document contains a patent number, title, inventor name, assignee, application number, filing date, prior publication date, foreign application priority data (if applicable), classification information, references cited, examiner and attorney information, abstract, specification, claims, and drawings.

Patent Grant Multi-Page Images (1790-current Calendar Year)

This data contains the multi-page image of each patent grant issued weekly (Tuesdays) from July 31, 1790 to the current Calendar Year in TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) with CCITT Group 4 Compression. This product is extracted from the USPTO's USAPat optical disc product, which is discontinued as of December 31, 2011. (The data will no longer be available in optical disc format, only online format at the web site below as of December 31, 2011.)

Also included are older grants that have new  Certificates of Correction and rescanned images of older patent grants. 

Average file size is 4 GB (compressed).

Patent Grant Single-Page Images (current Calendar Year)

This data contains the single-page image of each patent grant issued weekly (Tuesdays) in the current Calendar Year (January-December) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) with CCITT Group 4 Compression (single-page TIFFs). Each weekly file contains approximately 4,000 patent grants. 

Also included are separate Certificates of Correction, which includes previous grant documents. 

Average file size is 4 GB (compressed) per week.

Patent Grant Full Text with Embedded Images (2001-present)

This data contains the full text, Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) images of drawings, and complex work units (tables, mathematical expressions, genetic sequence data, and chemical structures) of each patent grant issued weekly (Tuesdays) from January 2001 to present.

Tables and sequence data are included using CALS markup. Mathematical expressions are included using MATHML markup and external Mathematica Notebook (NB) files. Chemical structures are represented by external CambridgeSoft Corp. ChemDraw (CDX) files and MDL Information Systems (MOL) files. Drawings, mathematical expressions, and chemical structures are also included as external TIFF with CCITT Group 4 Compression image files. Approximately 4,000 patent grants per week. 

Average file size is 836 MB (compressed) per week.

Patent Grant Bibliographic (1976-present)

This data contains the bibliographic text (i.e., the front page) of each patent grant issued weekly (Tuesdays) from January 1976 to present. The data set excludes images and/or drawings. The data set includes patent number, series code, application number, type of patent, filing date, title, issue date, inventor information, assignee name, foreign priority information, classification information, U.S. and foreign references, legal representative, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) information, and abstract. These files are a subset of the Patent Full-Text/APS Retrospective. 

Average file size is 2.7 MB (compressed).

This data contains the full text of each patent grant produced by an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process using the U.S. Patent Grant Image data from January 1920 to December 1979. The file format is modified Patent Full-Text/APS (a.k.a., modified Green Book), ASCII text. 

Average file size is 60 GB (compressed).
