About CDC

For more than 60 years, the CDC has protected health and promoted quality of life through the prevention and control of disease, injury, and disability. CDC is committed to programs that reduce the health and economic consequences of the leading causes of death and disability, thereby ensuring a long, productive, healthy life for all people.

CDC has been studying patterns of violence since the early 1980's. The Division of Violence Prevention seeks to help people live life to their fullest potential by preventing violence before it initially occurs.

    CDC's core activities in violence prevention include:
  • monitoring violence-related deaths, injuries, and behaviors;
  • conducting research on risk and protective factors;
  • helping partners plan, implement, and evaluate prevention strategies, programs, and policies; and
  • promoting the widespread adoption of effective strategies, programs, and policies.
