“The White House isn’t simply a home to First Families or meeting space for world leaders, it’s also known as ‘The People’s House,’ a place that should be open to everyone… Thousands of people have walked these halls and gazed at the artwork. They’ve examined the portraits of Washington, Lincoln, and Kennedy. They’ve imagined the history that’s unfolded here. And now you can do all of that without leaving your home. So go ahead, look around, enjoy the history and the beauty of these rooms. Because after all, this is your house, too.” – First Lady Michelle Obama

As part of President and Mrs. Obama’s commitment to open the White House to as many Americans as possible, we have partnered with the Google Art Project and allowed their 360 Street View cameras to capture the rooms that are featured on the public tour. Now anyone, anywhere, can experience the history and art of the White House via their computer.

As part of the White House’s partnership with the Google Art Project, the painting of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart that hangs in the East Room was photographed in extraordinary detail using super high resolution or "gigapixel" photo capturing technology, which enables you to study details of the brushwork and patina beyond that possible with the naked eye.
