If that milkshake or cheeseburger causes you to regret it later, you’re not alone. At least 30 million Americans are lactose intolerant.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Lactose intolerance results from the inability to digest the major sugar found in milk products. If you frequently experience discomfort within two hours of having dairy products, a visit to a health care provider can determine whether you are lactose intolerant. If you are, a diet with reduced dairy products is the key to reducing symptoms.
But make sure you get enough calcium every day. Many non-dairy foods are high in calcium, including oranges and broccoli.
