I’m sure you’ve heard about the obesity epidemic in this nation. So I’m going to be frank. We need to work together so more people don’t suffer from obesity-related health conditions.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Over one-third of adults and nearly 17 percent of children in the US are now obese. Research shows that African Americans have a higher rate of obesity than other ethnic groups. Obesity increases a person’s chances of developing health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Although eating less and exercising more may be easier said than done – even small steps can make a big difference. You’re never too old or too out of shape to change your habits. Our Weight-control Information Network provides resources, which can help you take action.
