Going away to college is an exciting time in any student’s life: The academic challenge, the independence – the weight gain?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

With new sleep schedules and all-you-can-eat meal plans, college students may fall victim to the so-called Freshman 15.

To expand their minds but not their waistlines, students should:

  • Select healthy foods like fruits and vegetables at the dining hall, and avoid the urge to grab high-calorie desserts.
  • Work in 60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity most days.
  • And opt for a cup of low-fat yogurt or a bowl of air-popped popcorn when hunger hits while studying.

And for more tips, visit our website at NIDDK,  or MyMajicDC.com Exit Disclaimer.  This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
