With the right strategy this holiday season, you can enjoy tasty treats and also escape the extra pounds.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Research suggests that many people never lose the weight they gain over the holidays. The good news is, you can avoid extra pounds by eating sensible portions. Remember:

One serving of pasta or of ice cream is about one half-cup, or the size of half of a baseball.

One serving of meat is about three ounces, or the size of a deck of cards.

One serving of a baked potato is the size of an adult’s fist.

Another way to control portions is to write down what, when, and how much you eat. This will make you more aware of the amount you’re consuming.
