Understanding Cancer Series“Discoveries in science and technology not only strengthen our economy, they inspire us as a people.” So said President Obama in announcing the 2012 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. Also known as PECASE, the citations are the highest government honor for these professionals—from both the public sector and academia—in the early stages of their independent research careers.
Among this year’s 96 awardees is Daniel R. Larson, Ph.D., from NCI’s Center for Cancer Research. Larson’s laboratory, a component of the Laboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression, is focused on understanding gene expression in eukaryotic cells (cells with a nucleus bound by a nuclear membrane).
PECASE winners met with the President in the White House East Room July 31, shortly before a ceremony at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, where White House Science and Technology Advisor John Holdren presented their awards.
President Clinton established the PECASE awards in 1996. Awardees are selected for their innovative research and their commitment to community service.
