Translational Research and Vision

The NEI marked its 40th anniversary with a series of symposia that brought together outstanding scientists who are making significant contributions to the advancement of vision science at the bench and in the clinic. The goals of these symposia were to facilitate collaborative interactions with colleagues within NIH and with the extramural research community, to foster new initiatives in vision research to expand our understanding of the functions of the visual system, and to translate basic research findings into effective treatments of visual disorders. The last symposium of the series entitled, "Translational Research and Vision" highlighted recent advances in translating molecular, genetic, and genomic approaches to the diseases of the visual system.
The symposium "Translational Research and Vision" was open to the scientific and medical community and featured a keynote address by NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins. The symposium highlighted the impacts of the human genome sequence on diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and covered a wide range of genetic, chemical, and molecular biological approaches to treat neurodegenerative eye diseases.
