The first ever NIH Minority Health Promotion Day will take place on Thursday, April 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the NIH Clinical Center. The daylong celebration will commemorate National Minority Health Month. The theme for the event is "Working Together to Improve Minority Health: Building Healthy Communities." The event is sponsored by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), in collaboration with several other Institutes and Centers, other Federal agencies, the NIH R&W, and local grantees. The event is open to the public; no registration is required.

Informational posters and exhibits will be on display throughout the day. Come learn about the variety of projects being undertaken to improve minority health, including work being done in the local Washington DC metropolitan area. You can also stop by to pick-up health promotion materials of interest to you.
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.: Speakers Forum in Masur Auditorium
The Social Determinants of Health in Health Disparities: Can We Afford to Ignore Them? According to the World Health Organization, "the social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels. The social determinants of health are mostly responsible for health inequities - the unfair and avoidable differences in health status."
This session will explore the role of factors such as housing circumstances, environmental influences, transportation, poverty, and social justice in health disparities. It will also highlight work taking place nationally and globally by Federal agencies to address the social determinants of health in an effort to improve the health of minority and other underserved populations.
