Director Vaccine Research Center

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader for the position of director of the Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center (VRC). NIAID supports and conducts basic, applied, and clinical research to better understand, treat, and prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.

VRC’s mission is to conduct research that facilitates the development of effective vaccines for human disease. VRC’s primary focus is an effective vaccine against HIV. In addition, VRC also carries out basic, translational, and clinical research to develop vaccine candidates for biodefense and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. To carry out its mission, VRC evaluates and seeks to optimize immune responses generated by candidate vaccines and advances the most promising candidates into clinical trials. To conduct clinical trials, VRC has established the infrastructure to produce vaccine products using good manufacturing practices and to manage regulatory issues related to clinical studies.

The VRC director reports to the NIAID director and provides overall executive direction and scientific leadership for VRC’s basic, clinical, and translational research activities. He or she also serves as a principal advisor to the NIAID director on vaccines and related biomedical research affairs. In addition, he or she serves as an expert consultant and advisor both nationally and internationally on the development of novel vaccine strategies against HIV and other biodefense and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, such as influenza, Ebola/Marburg, West Nile virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), alphaviruses like Chikungunya, and the Western/Eastern/Venezuelan class of encephalitides.

VRC seeks exceptional candidates for the director position.

Key responsibilities of the VRC director position include developing, directing, and coordinating VRC’s new and existing basic, translational, and clinical research programs; overseeing program operations, including technology transfer and licensing, program planning and evaluation, and financial and administrative management; determining the effectiveness of current VRC research; recommending or developing new or revised programs to meet national medical health needs; allocating VRC human, physical, and financial resources; developing and recommending policies for the execution of multidisciplinary research; and representing NIAID intramural interests at the NIH Board of Scientific Directors meetings and on other NIH committees.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree, be a U.S. citizen, and exhibit exceptional demonstrated leadership ability managing complex basic, translational and clinical research programs encompassing cutting edge frontiers of virology, immunology, genetic bio-engineering, structural and molecular biology, and laboratory animal medicine. The successful candidate will possess the training and experience to lead complex, multidisciplinary, and collaborative activities required to develop effective HIV and biodefense vaccines.

Candidates must have a detailed understanding of the pathogenesis of and immune response to HIV and other infectious diseases; of the strategies and principles involved in the creation of novel vaccine vectors and immunogens; and of new vaccination approaches.
