Regional Information Resources: Oklahoma
Admitted to the union in 1907, Oklahoma (nicknamed the "Sooner State") was the 46th state. The name Oklahoma means "Land of the Red People" in the Choctaw language, and today Oklahoma is home to more American Indian tribes than any other state. Thirty-nine tribal headquarters and members of at least sixty-seven tribes make their home in Oklahoma. Oklahoma has a large variety of geographic areas: plains, ancient mountains, salt flats, pine forests, sand dunes, rolling hills, and alabaster caves.
Oklahoma has a population of 3,396,794. According to the 2003 Census, the population of Oklahoma is 76.1% Caucasian, 8% American Indian, 7.6% African American, and approximately 1.6% Asian. 5.7% of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin. Oklahoma has two major cities: Oklahoma City (pop. 537,734) and Tulsa (pop 381,479).
