NCI and the Republic of Peru Sign Statement of Intent

The U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the Republic of Peru signed a statement of intent to share an interest in fostering collaborative biomedical research in oncology and a common goal in educating and training the next generation of cancer research scientists and clinicians. Both parties expressed a desire to enhance the discovery and development of new anti-cancer agents and prevention strategies to enhance the design, implementation, and analysis of cancer treatment and prevention trials, basic science research, and epidemiologic studies. Most importantly, this signing acknowledges that cancer currently ranks among the top three deadliest killers in Latin America and worldwide, and is no longer considered a disease of high-income countries alone.

The signing was by the NCI Director of the Center for Global Health (http://www.cancer.gov/aboutnci/globalhealth), Edward L. Trimble, M.D., for NCI Director Harold E. Varmus, M.D., and Peruvian Ambassador Harold Forsyth. NCI and the Republic of Peru intend to cooperate in activities which may include:

• Basic, clinical, and translational research on cancer:
• Bioinformatics and data systems
• Advanced technologies and methodologies
• Dissemination of cancer information and public education
• Enhancing existing cancer registries.
